I'm the woman Of Mehrunes of the Warriors, and the found Daughter of the First Captain of Port Kar... Free Lanced my way til I became accepted fully as a Merchant Caste

tho, I have always remained that adventerous, free spirited, hard working and foul tempered woman one expects that came from the Marshes...

Well if they are insulted then they might wish to reevaluate their position in the roles. You hired a man to escort you? Ok then that will work, if a Warrior is willing then you could have this service for free, and should have it so, if there is one and you are about the city's business.
For the collar that tired old threat seems to be the only answer to many. I always while I was playing in GE would smile when I heard that. I would look over the man making the threat and the woman receiving it and if I thought she could take him I would sit near to watch the little drama play out. If the man be of your city and talks like that then I would simply walk away from him were I you. For me I will protect those women of my home. A collar was for the captured woman a prize from another city not tossed on the free women of my own home. Just my take on it.
Then again I am not collar happy either. I have collared only I think three for RP reasons in my number of years in Gor. The one slave I collared and had RPed with for days prior to that I still have two and a half years later. A collar is not costume jewelry it should have meaning. Many Warriors cheapen that and the Warrior caste itself.
Just my thoughts. Scarlett clothing or black don’t make a man……

Mhm interesting thread...

Mercenary was not a very prestigeous job. For most parts mercenaries were outlaws or poorer low castes that mostly out of desperation, and sometimes for the thrill of the raiding and plundering, joined a mercenary company and then got rigorously trained throughout the winter into becoming a proper "fighter".

Most mercenary-companies did have Red Castes in charge though, so there would still be some ties and responsibilitie towards the Home Stone the leading Warriors belong to.

But generally I think mercenaries would be considered as scum, poor low castes/outlaws, with few morals or standards that only are in it for the "spoils" they can gather when they're tasked with missions. I'd say that a FW knowing -that- about mercenaries would avoid hiring them. (There's one direct example I know off in the books where a FW 'did' hire them for her protection and it didn't turn out so well for her).

I also know there is the odd case of Trevans being described as mercenaries but I'm pretty convinced that John Norman never really figured out what exactly "Treve" was supposed to be until later books. In the earlier books he describes them as outlaw tarnsmen, and only in later books he describes them as having castes. etc. I'm of the opinion that with other sources in mind (such as the Voltai appearantly being full with outlaw camps and groups), that Treve recruits it's mercenaries from the outlaw camps it tolerates living in it's mountain range.

I've been playing mercenary a bit lately. Whenever sims close that I play warrior in, I like to act as if I have been exiled by that city, it makes more sense than assuming the place suddenly fell off the map. There are a couple interesting things about mercenaries.

Some companies are more lucrative than others, Deitrich of Tarnburg comes to mind as one that might make loads of money. A man with a good reputation might do pretty well for himself. I figure being a veteran of so many battles and an officer in so many cities at this point, that Meh should bring in a high price for his services. After being warrior in so many cities at this point, it is starting to get a bit silly, especially due to the seriousness of the home-stone commitment, the mercenary role has been a graceful solution to that problem instead of killing Meh off and starting over.

well seems I have NOW insulted a warrior because I hire these men instead of asking the gaurds for escort...

and when I told the warrior, I've had much less threats of a collar from a Mercaneries than I have from pure bred warriors... the Warrior than warns I'm at risk for a collar

I love warriors, don't get me wrong I'm companioned to a warrior... but why is it that warriors RPers mention the word "collar"?

Wait, you live in a city that actually has Warriors in it? Wasn't that long ago that we heard on the forums that they were a dying breed driven off by the FW and slaves that had overpopulated the cities.
