Nchi Valley (mamba and gorean culture) - General Recruitment

Postby cleopatra » Fri Jun 22, 2012 1:23 am

The Nchi Valley is an area tucked at the base of the Ven Highlands bordering the Jungles of Schendi. Our goal with this sim is to establish and educate SL Gor about the mamba culture. Far too long has the culture been dumbed down to mere cannibals and savages with super powers.

With that in mind, the Waheshimu tribe is a tribe of the Tharlarion people that practices its culture by the books. We seek warriors and women to fill our ranks. Use of a legitimate Swahili translator rather than using that silly and inaccurate mamba translator preferred.

Additionally, we are recruiting for the City of Sarafu, a small mining city just on the north side of the valley. We are currently seeking and admin/ubar to run the city that has been in SL Gor for a while and knows what it takes to run a city. An established group would be great but we are open to suggestions.

The Nchi Valley practices BtB ideals but any non-BtB ideals are handled IC instead of using OOC rules to keep people out. We are not BtB or GE. We are just Gor. Roleplay at your own risk.

If you are interested, IM Nyekundu (cleopatra.jetaime) or Fitz Catnap for more information. Thanks!

Wow... an attempt to do the mamba role by the book? I salute your bravery.

I have to ask...Swahili?

Good luck in your endeavor.

Actually, Swahili makes sense. We don't have an actual Mamba language, but it is clear they didn't speak 'common gorean', and I imagine Norman imagining the language something like Swahili. So, might as well use a real language that no one here is likely to speak. Though, there would be another possibility...

... why not make one up, completely? I mean... I have played a character that spoke an non-existing language. Just babble. Not that hard to do. And you could simply IM each other the actual meaning, in so far as necessary. Might make people rely on emoting actions more and on 'speech' less.

Use of a legitimate Swahili translator
:o.O:

Why not just type, "/me says in mamba, 'I shall endeavor to eat your face now.'"

Instead of use...any translator at all? I've never understood why people use those things. Needlessly complicated.

Nah, using another language is cool. When you do it right. Trust me. :)

Let's keep this thread for the advertisement of the Nchi Valley sim. Discussions about Swahili/translators should be a separate thread. Thanks.
Save a red pen. Love an Admin.

Port Schendi's official language was Gorean for various reasons though. The language of the Jungles of Schendi was Ushindi primarily and each tribe had their own dialects of it to keep other people from understanding what they were saying. Ushindi translates roughly to Swahili so that is why we chose that.

The purpose of using a translator is just that. When you say something like /me says in mamba "i like turtles," how many people are likely to NOT metagame that and pretend they understand every word you are saying. Using a translator, albeit the green text ones, that I despise, or actually incorporating another language into an emote forces people to try to actually figure out what you are saying as they would in a real interaction.

Thanks for the feedback so far. It is greatly appreciated.
