List-O-Viewers and Comparisons

Postby ~pancake~ » Wed Dec 14, 2011 3:13 pm

With the new release of Phoenix with mesh I am even more torn than ever about the various viewers and what is best for me.

I decided to give myself a make work project to compare them. Probably a spreadsheet with viewers down one side, features along the top (RLV, Mesh, Multiple Layers, etc) because I'm a dork like that. MMMMM maybe even pivot tables *swoons*

Here are the ones I'm planning to include. I've only added a few pro/cons under each title for now because I do think a chart format is going to work best for the way my brain works.

If anyone wants to add some pros/cons for these viewers or suggest additional ones I'd love the help and input.

Thanks.

I am using Phoenix, Ascent, Firestorm Beta Mesh and the new Firestorm Release.

The worst of all is the new Firestorm Release. At first I loved it, had awesome FPS, until I realized that in ANY sim with many alphas (aka forests) my screen freezes every ten seconds, turns black, Firestorm seems to not respond etc. In other sim, it works efficiently and well, but in the sims I rp in...crap. I am really annoyed about that.

So I went back to the Firestorm Beta Mesh, which...doesn't show me the sim I am in in the top bar (where you can click on to see the Covenant and such). Minor thing, but it sorta bugs me, and it wasn't like this before.

Ascent/Phoenix I use to doublelog, but I simply love multiple layers too much still to go back.

Thanks Frevet and I agree, the new Firestorm has significantly lowered my performance and I'm getting lock ups which I never got before.

I'm going to try Niran's this week. It looks like it can do some prety cool things with in world photography so I want to play around with that.

I'm still using the old phoenix with no mesh myself..its not the best but I've not really found a viewer I'm 100% comfortable with yet.

I was a long time Phoenix user, but lately I've been having problems with things rezzing, including my avatar, which always looks like some freak of nature with that ruth hair fix.

I wanted to see the Skerry build as anything but strangely shaded shapes, so I downloaded Exodus, Singularity, and Firestorm. Exodus - the whole world is black. Firestorm - can anyone say lag? And lots of it. Singularity is actually working best for me with my video card and comp. I get about 65 fps on it. Which, I hear, is pretty good.

Did they take RLV out of phoenix? I could have sworn it was there but then again I havent used it since last spring.

I am a 2.0 convert and I personally think the Linden viewer is the best for all over performance. But I can't let go of the Radars available in the TPL's.

Yes the Phoenix release this week with Mesh doesn't support RLV and as I understand it, probably going to be the last major Phoenix release we see.

IF I read this correctly, RLV is there, just not updated & wont be (in Phoenix, anyway)

"No RLVa Update
RLVa has not been updated in this Phoenix viewer release. This was my decision, not that of Kitty Barnett. Although I said some time back we would update RLVa in Phoenix it became obvious that the work/time commitment involved in doing so was simply not reasonable or responsible. Kitty is a very valuable asset to this team and I refuse to take her away from the ground breaking work she does in Firestorm and v2/v3 to put a large time commitment into a dying viewer code base. She is worth far more than that. If you want updated RLVa I would suggest using the Firestorm Viewer or Kitty's own ViewerCatznip. I offer you my sincerest apologies for going back on my word in regards to RLVa update in Phoenix, however I believe it was the right decision. "

You very well could be right Rob.

I've never used RLV so I don't personally know how much of a show stopper not having the RLVa update in the new Phoenix release is for those who do use it. I understood it was a pretty major "con" for those who do use RLV and wanted to use the new Phoenix, but I could be wrong.

I'll change the wording from no RLV to non updated RLV or something like that in my checklist when I get it all done.

I logged into SL for the first time in weeks, today, and gave Firestorm a good try. Made myself comfortable with it, more or less, made some adjustments.

And I have to say... I am disappointed. I was expecting better FPS, faster loading, based on some comments I read. But if anything, it seemed slower and less stable.

Also, somehow, the colours I get with Firestorm seem incredibly flat. I tried adjusting the brightness, which helped a bit, but still... quite flat, really. It is based on viewer 3, so it has that awful viewer 3 search window as well.

Maybe I can see mesh now... but I don't think there is a lot of Mesh out there, yet. The gals that want it in their clothing tend not to be able to use it, unless they are willing to change their shape (which, understandably, most aren't). People don't want to wear mesh hair because they will look bald/funny to a good portion of SL residents. And builders... well... I guess they aren't really using Mesh much yet.

Have to say... thumps down for Firestorm. I will use phoenix instead, next time I log on.

Looking forward to reading more about some of the other viewers.
