Another non-traditional MMORPG for the list:

Chronicles of Elyria - A complete redesign of the MMORPG with the focus on RPG. It's another town building, territory defence MMO but with so many unique features, the Developer Journals will give an idea of where they're going.

Image

One of the main features is, your character is mortal, will age and die after about a year. Ageing and lifestyle will affect their appearance too. But not all is lost, you can pass your belongings on to your new character/offspring, with an affinity for the skills you learned, allowing them to progress further if they follow the same path.

It's a skill based game, with roles for farmers, crafters, explorers, guards etc. There will be no minimap, no skill bars. Venturing out far from civilisation requires some survival skill and those who travel furthest and discover resources, can sell maps to the location back in town. But the route could become a target for bandits, so the town can set merceneray guilds after them... the idea is, everything will be player driven with 'contracts' making those negotiations possible. And whilst you're looking at the big picture, there're pickpockets and burglars to contend with too.

The forums are active and worth browsing for an idea of the concept behind the game, there is much more to it.

I thought Elyria sounded pretty nifty as a concept, except for the whole permadeath thing which, while you can then carry on progress to a new character, has never really appealed to me.

Then I did some more reading and realized the only way you can really accomplish anything of note is through a "Family," incorporating efforts into the larger goals of guilds and the like, or you're pretty much inconsequential. In MMORPGs with raid content you'd expect this in the endgame for the best gear and whatnot, but the majority of the game you can do on your own or in small groups. In Elyria, it sounds like that's sorta not the case: you're either part of something influential, or you're just along for the ride. That kinda spoiled it for me.

That and the fee for each new character generation, but if the core game were worth it I could overlook that.

The character mortality is proving controversial.

My own performance in recent MMOs has been appalling, I rarely make it past a fortnight before uninstalling the game. So a character in Elyria which lasts a year, compared to my usual <=month lifespan, is longer than I'd need ;)

In the cosmically rare event that this MMO lives up to expectations, then $2.5/month is a modest subscription. But it can become expensive for maintaining multiple characters, at $30 each.

It is going to be a niche game, the combat system too will turn away those who prefer tab-targeting and cooldown based battles. A proper trailer is expected next week, for now they've teased a couple of fencing clips on Twitter.

It's arcade style combat, with your reach, speed, stamina costs etc determined by your weapon.

Pantheon : Rise of the Fallen, is looking like more of a traditional MMORPG. They aim to bring back the social grouping and 'trinity' features from classic MMOs.

On another note, I came across another vid on Daybreak's deceit and the EQ scandal(s):

So more like Dark Souls-style combat? That's interesting. Though with lag, that kind of combat is...inconsistent, at best.

Sidenote, characters won't always last a year. If you lead a dangerous lifestyle - as a soldier or exploring dangerous territory that gets you killed frequently, for instance - your life is significantly shorter, as injuries and deaths take time off your total lifespan. A combat-oriented character, unless played so perfectly that they never take serious injuries or die, is more likely to stay down

From there, your lifespan will drop by two days for every time you have to spirit walk due to "spirit loss." If you die an average of once per month, your character will then live around eleven months before you have to pay for a new Spark of Life.
