Game Trailers

Postby Chron » Sun Dec 12, 2010 9:32 am

One of the earliest game trailers I remember was for Planescape: Torment. It shipped with the 5 CD version of Baldur's Gate and when you first installed the game, you'd watch the trailer for Planescape which was due for release on the following year. This was in 1998...

I remember watching this and thinking 'One day, games are going to look that good!".

At the time, developers did not have many options to distribute their trailers, so it made little financial sense for them to invest in one. Then in the following years, residential broadband became available and opened channels for delivering media on to an international audience.

Just six years later, the quality of trailers accellerated to rival those for Hollywood blockbusters...

Another six years on, there hasn't been as significant an improvement in the visual quality of trailers, but the rules for gaming have changed; Every epic game, needs an epic trailer.

This is the latest one I've watched, then I started thinking back to the original Deus Ex and on to the evolution of game trailers.

Dues Ex is amazing.

Here are a couple that are really well known.

Dragon Age: Origins, which is by far the best Fantasy RPG ever.

Naturally, its sequel. Dragon Age II

Lineage II. Haven't yet played it, but this trailer is pretty neat, albeit it reminds me of Final Fantasy a lot.

The most epic one I've seen is:

Perhaps this?:

League of Legends is fun...kinda?

But nothing gets me harder than GT. I orgasm several times while watching this intro:

The Witcher II. I am sooo looking forward to play this. Not as wellknown as DAO, but still...worth its money. And finally one badass sexy elf who isn't totally gay, but hellish goodlooking. And his voice...godlike.

For fans of Elder Scrolls, this might be interesting, lookwise. Got surprisingly good critics, too.

For fans of action adventure games/ Hack'n'Slay games aka God of War, Dante's Inferno, Bayonetta, Darksiders is a whole lot of fun. :disney:

Heroes of Newerth, the only standalone game for DoTA-fans that is really worth its bit of money and overall always gets better critics (balance etc.) than its concurrence like LoL. If you like that sort of game, it is awesome.

Bloodline Champions, created by gamers for gamers, THE game for PvP nerds. You like WoW arena but always get pissy because it's constantly unbalanced and one or two combos are just so much better than all the others? Play BC!

Just looking through these reminds me of how far things have gone. The Planescape trailer is crap by today's standards, but the game is still the best RPG I've ever played, from story, gameplay, and replayability perspectives. Then you have the Old Republic trailer which is Hollywood-quality amazing, but the game is... well... not so much.

Yeah, Planescape rocked. Probably as good as, say, dragon age, story-wise, art-wise and game-play wise. Just far less impressive, graphically (since it is old).

The Old Republic not so much? The game isn't finished yet, is it? How can you tell? I hope you are not going by the rumors based on the words of one ex employee from an affiliated company. :) I am hoping that it will be great. I find most MMO's lacking. I was hoping that this one might be one for me.

I'd say Planescape takes the cake on world-building. Dragon Age still has elves that live in forests and love bows, dwarves that live in mountains and swing hammers while getting drunk and battleraging, human empires that are corrupt and falling apart, and even a rightful heir to the throne of men who doesn't want the position. They're tropes taken straight from Tolkien that haven't changed in decades. Planescape at least threw everything out the window, not just as far as the environment is concerned, but even all the familiar tropes and metaphors we were used to seeing in RPGs so far.

As soon as I made that post, I realized I was mixing up the Old Republic with Star Wars Galaxies <.< >.> I reserve judgement on it, but I still stick to my premise that trailers are often way better than the games they're supposed to represent.
